The Padma Multipurpose Bridge — built entirely with Bangladesh's own funds after the World Bank withdrew financing — has generated a measurable economic multiplier effect. Using Bridge Management data, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics surveys, and satellite nightlight analysis, we quantify the return on the country's largest infrastructure investment.

Key Statistics
  • When the Padma Multipurpose Bridge opened on June 25, 2022, it was more than an infrastructure project — it was a statement of national self-reliance.
  • > The Bangladesh Bridge Authority reports that the Padma Bridge generated Tk 1,248 crore ($113.5 million) in toll revenue in FY2025, exceeding initial projections by 38%.
  • Cumulative vehicle crossings surpassed 25 million by June 2026.
  • ## The Traffic Data Daily vehicle crossings averaged 24,800 in June 2026, up from 12,400 in July 2022.
  • The traffic mix is 42% passenger cars and microbuses, 31% trucks and freight vehicles, 18% buses, and 9% three-wheelers.

When the Padma Multipurpose Bridge opened on June 25, 2022, it was more than an infrastructure project — it was a statement of national self-reliance. Built entirely with Bangladesh's own resources after the World Bank cancelled its $1.2 billion commitment in 2012 over corruption allegations, the $3.62 billion bridge connecting Mawa to Jajira is the deepest foundation bridge in the world, with piles driven 127 metres into the riverbed.

The Traffic Data

Daily vehicle crossings averaged 24,800 in June 2026, up from 12,400 in July 2022. The traffic mix is 42% passenger cars and microbuses, 31% trucks and freight vehicles, 18% buses, and 9% three-wheelers. The growth in truck traffic — which has increased 240% since opening — is the strongest indicator of the bridge's economic integration effect.

The Economic Multiplier

A 2025 study by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) estimated the bridge's economic multiplier at 1.9-2.2x — meaning each taka of investment has generated approximately 2 taka in economic output. The study attributes this to three mechanisms: reduced transport costs (travel time from Dhaka to Khulna fell from 6 to 3 hours), improved logistics reliability (the ferry crossing was notorious for 24-48 hour delays during monsoon), and enhanced market access for agricultural producers in the southwest.

Sectoral Impact

The agricultural sector in the southwestern districts of Barishal, Khulna, and Faridpur has experienced the most visible transformation. BBS agricultural marketing data shows that farm-gate prices for key crops in these districts increased by 15-28% between 2022 and 2025, as transport cost reductions improved market access. The wholesale price differential between Dhaka and Barishal for rice narrowed from Tk 8/kg to Tk 3/kg over the same period.

Industrial output in the southwest also accelerated. The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority reports that land prices in the Mongla Economic Zone tripled between 2022 and 2026, and 19 factories commenced operations in the zone during this period, compared to 3 in the preceding five years.

Nightlight Analysis

Satellite nightlight data from the NASA Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), analysed by DOCFLiX.site, shows a 34% increase in nightlight intensity within a 20-kilometre radius of the bridge's southern approach between 2022 and 2025, compared to 11% growth in the control area 50 kilometres away. This is consistent with increased economic activity in the immediate zone of influence.
