The Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023 triggered the deadliest Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1948. Using IDF operational statements, UN OCHA situation reports, and satellite imagery, we reconstruct the military timeline and track the five regional fronts that opened in its wake.

The Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Israeli military campaign in Gaza, have reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. One year on, the conflict has opened five regional fronts and created a humanitarian crisis without modern precedent in the region.

The October 7 Attack

At 6:29 AM on October 7, 2023, Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa Flood — a coordinated assault involving an estimated 3,000 fighters crossing the Gaza border fence at 29 breach points. According to the Israeli security cabinet's own inquiry, approximately 1,139 people were killed and 251 taken hostage.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) published its internal investigation on February 27, 2025, acknowledging intelligence failures dating back to July 2023, when a detailed Shin Bet warning of an imminent attack was reportedly assessed as having "low probability." The investigation led to the resignation of Military Intelligence Director Major General Aharon Haliva on September 11, 2024.

The Gaza Campaign

The IDF launched Operation Swords of Iron with sustained aerial bombardment beginning October 7, followed by a ground invasion of northern Gaza on October 27. The campaign expanded to southern Gaza in December 2023 with the capture of Khan Younis, and to Rafah in May 2024.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), as of September 2025, more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 92,000 wounded. The Gaza Ministry of Health, whose data is accepted by the UN, reports that women and children account for approximately 55% of verified fatalities.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a provisional measures order on January 26, 2024, in the case South Africa v. Israel, finding it "plausible" that Israel's actions could constitute genocide. The ICJ ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide and allow humanitarian access. Israel has rejected the jurisdiction of the court in this matter.

The Iran-Israel Direct Exchange

On April 13, 2024, Iran launched approximately 300 drones and missiles directly at Israel — the first direct Iranian military strike on Israeli territory. Israel, with assistance from US, UK, French, and Jordanian forces, intercepted 99% of the projectiles.

Israel responded on April 19 with a limited precision strike near Isfahan, targeting an air defense radar installation. The calibrated exchange established what analysts termed "active deterrence" — a new paradigm of direct, limited strikes rather than proxy warfare.

The Houthi Red Sea Crisis

Yemen's Ansar Allah (Houthi) movement began targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea on November 19, 2023, with the seizure of the Galaxy Leader. By September 2025, more than 130 commercial vessels had been attacked using anti-ship missiles, drones, and fast attack craft.

The United States launched Operation Prosperity Guardian on December 18, 2023, followed by direct strikes on Houthi military infrastructure in Yemen beginning January 11, 2024. The UK participated in three rounds of joint strikes. Despite these operations, Houthi attacks continued at reduced frequency, with the group demonstrating intact launch capability through June 2025.

The economic impact: shipping transits through the Suez Canal fell by 60%, forcing rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope and increasing shipping costs by an estimated $120 billion annually according to the International Monetary Fund.

The Northern Front

Hezbollah began launching rockets into northern Israel on October 8, 2023. The exchanges escalated through 2024, with Israel conducting targeted strikes in Beirut and Hezbollah launching increasingly deep salvos into Israeli territory. Approximately 80,000 Israeli civilians evacuated from the northern border region remain displaced.

Humanitarian Impact

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reports that 1.9 million people — approximately 85% of Gaza's population — are internally displaced. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) issued a famine warning for northern Gaza in March 2025, with 1.1 million people experiencing catastrophic food insecurity.
